CBT Discussion Session - Bletchley Park - 26 March 2009The DAMA UK Communication between Business and IT Working Group facilitated a discussion session at Bletchley Park. The session format was chosen based on feedback from the previous AGM and to promote dialog amongst the membership. The day was broken down into three sessions: Where are we now? What are the upcoming forces for radical change? So what are we going to do about remaining relevant to the business? Where are we now? The delegates were sent a paper setting out the background for the day prior to the event and the first session was to gain a consensus of our views on the current situation regarding the effectiveness and relevance of data management in today’s world. There was significant engagement with various points of view represented, however the overall consensus was that we are at risk of being sidelined and that there is work we can do to improve data managers ‘street credibility’ and sell our value to the business. Forces for Radical Change The second session looked at what forces for change are out there now or on the horizon that may prompt a change in our traditional methods of working. The session started with a short video of Tim Berners-Lee discussing the Semantic Web and his vision that it will change the way the world works. The seminar discussed this and other influences ranging from technologies through legislation and regulation, and the economic climate and jointly developed a list of 27 key factors with an influence (potentially both positive and negative) on data management today. So what are we going to do about it? For the final session the seminar split into three groups to discuss experiences, share best practice and frame ideas for how to move forward and show that good data management practices are still, if not more relevant now that they have ever been. Each group produced a précis of their thoughts for feedback to the whole group to gain the benefit of the shared wisdom. The day ended with an interesting tour of Bletchley Park learning something of its unique history. This also provided the delegates an opportunity to further network and continue the discussion following from a stimulating day. Feedback Throughout the day delegates made notes relating to their experience, thoughts or questions in the areas above, and attached them to flip charts posted around the room. These notes together with the flip chart summaries generated throughout the day have been recorded verbatim and shared with the delegates. This is not the end of the discussion - as there was a significant amount of interest generated the CBT Group are researching the best methods for continuing the debate. Please contact DAMA UK to register your interest and click here to download a copy of the notes. |
