Comply or Die - 17 September 2008 at the Touchbase Centre, Heathrow

“Comply or Die” was the title of our September seminar at the Touchbase Centre, Heathrow that incorporated our AGM.

Lee Edwards of the DAMA Committee gave a brief summary of the year past, present and future.  There followed a useful discussion covering such diverse topics as our input to SFIA “Skills Framework for the Information Age”, DAMA – International, Future UK Events (locations, style and topics).

Iain Bourne of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) led a highly interactive session on the current challenges and future opportunities in Data Protection.  He was very frank about where the legislation is good and where it has not worked, and gave us insight into the evolution of the way the ICO sees itself and conducts its business.  One of the key changes since they began their work is in the public’s perception of data protection.  People are now aware that they have a right to information about themselves.

After lunch Susan Mann of Marriott Harrison led us through the intricacies of transferring personal data from inside to outside the European Economic Area … legally!  Now we know the significance of US “Safe Harbour” provisions and that the “Article 29 Working Party” has a significance way beyond its innocent sounding name.

Unfortunately John Tomlinson of Ford Credit was unable to be with us, but Lee Edwards form the same organization was able to take us through some real life examples of transferring employee data across borders. This material is not available at the current time.
