21 October 2008 - Joint BCS DMSG/DAMA UK - "The evolution of database technology" at the BCS Offices, Southampton Street, London - Event FlyerThis was a well-attended joint event with the UK Chapter of DAMA International and we were privileged to have some very distinguished speakers, including Charles Bachman. Charlie was the technical leader of the ANSI/SPARC Database Task Group, which developed a general specification of a database management system based on the network model to serve as an industry standard and of the ANSI/SPARC Study Group that developed the “Three Schema Architecture” for data systems. He was the 1973 winner of the A. M. Turing Award of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and he was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society in 1977. Bill Olle started the day with a presentation titled The History of data base management and his slides are available for download here. Our second speaker was Graham Wood of Oracle. His presentation was titled Oracle: From Client Server to the Grid and beyond and his slides are available for download here. Our after lunch speaker was Stephen Brobst, the Chief Technology Officer of the Teradata Corporation. His presentation was titled The Future of Data Warehousing. This talk examined key trends in data warehouse deployment and developments in advanced technology, including: (1) data acquisition and delivery, (2) operational intelligence in the real-time enterprise, and (3) analytic applications architecture. The implications of these technology developments for data warehouse implementations were emphasised. Unfortunately Stephen's presentation is not available for download. A hard copy may be available to those who registered and attended. Charlie Bachman gave our final presentation, titled Themes and Directions. His slides are available for download here. We hope to have audio recordings of the presentations available in the near future. |
