Graeme Simsion - 12 September 2005

'Four Hundred Data Modellers can't be wrong! was enjoyed by around 25 DAMA UK members and guests on a warm evening in London. As an Australian, this was probably not the best day to be in London, as England actually managed to walk away from Lords with the Ashes. Head held high Graeme entertained the troops with this interesting and informative presentation followed by a drinks reception.

Graham has spent the last three years taking a break from full-time consulting to complete the third edition of Data Modelling Essentials (published in November 2004) and to undertake research at the University of Melbourne. The subject of that research has been data modelling - and data modellers. He has interviewed, surveyed or tested over four hundred practitioners in the UK, US, Scandinavia and Australia, looking at how they approach modelling, what they believe, and how their solutions compare. Throughout, he has kept the focus on practical issues, while maintaining a level of rigor appropriate to academic research.

    - What do data modellers believe data modelling is?
    - How do we organise the end-to-end database design task?  Who is responsible for what?
    - Is data modelling more or less creative than architecture?
    - How much variation is there in the models that different modellers?
produce in response to a common problem?
    - Do data modellers have personal styles?

These questions have strong practical implications and should be relevant and interesting to modellers and non-modellers alike. Graeme is uniquely placed to answer them from a background that now combines research results with extensive practical experience.

Many thanks to Graeme for presenting to DAMA UK during a busy travelling schedule, and thanks to our hosts, the Jury's Clifton Ford Hotel and our sponsors ASG and Trillium Software. Click on the title below to download your copy of Graeme's presentation.
