Speaker LibraryKeith Gordon established himself as an independent consultant and trainer in 1998 after serving a full career in the British army. Keith's Army service, which included many technical and educational appointments, culminated with him leading the Army's Data Management programme, in which he was responsible for developing and implementing the policy, standards and procedures to manage data as a corporate resource across the Army. Keith has continued to pursue his interest in data management in his consultancy and training work since he retired from the Army. Keith is also an Associate Lecturer with the Open University and an examiner for the Information Systems Examination Board.
Nigel Turner, Head of Information & Knowledge Management consultancy within BT Computing Partners, BT’s software house. Leading a team of 20, Nigel specialises in data management, quality, migration, visualisation and architecture. Prior to his 21 years at BT, Nigel worked as an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Political Science in the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Peter Haine's early experience with relational database, whilst with the Savant organisation, taught him the importance of data modelling and data management fundamentals. In 1981 he worked with James Martin to build a training course in strategic data planning and relational data modelling that was delivered at public forums as well as to a plethora of blue chip companies in Europe and the US. Since that time Peter has never been far away from the challenges of integrating critical business processes, including a global supply chain initiative for GlaxoSmithKline, through ensuring a stable underpinning data environment.
John Oxton has worked in the IT industry for 25 years. For the last 20 of those years he has concentrated on data administration and design. He has worked as a DBA designing for several DBMSs including IDMSX, Tandem Relational, Teradata, DLI full function and Fastpath and DB2. Applications covered include customer operational data stores, account and transaction processing systems and data warehouses. For the last 7 years he has concentrated on Data Architecture within Barclays retail and business banking environments. Since May 2001, he has had the responsibility for implementing a data architecture across the whole Barclays.
Andrew Watson is Vice President and Technical Director at OMG, where he has overall responsibility for the technology adoption process, and also chairs the Architecture Board, which oversees the technical consistency of OMG's specifications. Before joining OMG's staff I had previously been representing ANSA at OMG meetings since 1990, and had chaired the ORB2 Task Force from its inception in 1992 until stepping down in 1996. After graduating from the University of Cambridge with first class honours in Computer Science and Engineering, I spent two years at Hewlett-Packard's Bristol Research Centre working on one of the first commercial X.400 implementations, and subsequently investigating the current state of software engineering practice within the company as a whole. I returned to Cambridge in 1987 to join Harlequin, then a newly-formed start-up with 12 staff, where I was one of the original designers and implementors of LispWorks, the company's ground-breaking Common Lisp programming environment for workstations, and later R&D manager, responsible for the company's extensive involvement in both British and European collaborative projects. (Harlequin has since been split into two companies; Global Graphics and Xanalys.) I joined the ANSA core team in 1989, working initially on the design of the ANSA Computational Model and DPL, a language realising that model. This evolved into work on type systems for distributed, object-oriented programming which has had a direct influence on the ODP reference model.
John A. Zachman is the originator of the "Framework for Enterprise Architecture" which has received broad acceptance around the world as an integrative framework, or "periodic table" of descriptive representations for Enterprises. He is not only known for this work on Enterprise Architecture but is also known for his early contributions to IBM's Information Strategy methodology as well as to their Executive team planning techniques.Mr. Zachman retired from IBM in 1990, having served them for 26 years. He is Chief Executive Officer of the Zachman Institute for Framework Advancement (ZIFA), an organization dedicated to advancing the conceptual and implementation states of the art in Enterprise Architecture. He also operates his own education and consulting business.
Vicki Peacock is Head of Information Strategy and Information Quality within Abbey National. She has been with Abbey National for almost 12 years and for the majority of that time has been involved with all aspects of information, from IT application development, project management of Information Management related projects, Information Quality and latterly Information Strategy and the strategic development of information to support business strategy. Vicki is responsible for a specialist information team within the key business division. Vicki has been instrumental in driving forward the development of a central architecture to support the Information, in addition to promoting a culture of Information Governance.
Jon Hill delivers Information Quality initiatives for British Telecommunications (BT) within the UK. He has 15 years experience in System Design and Development. Over the last four years he has focused on improving the quality of information within BT delivering over 170 million pounds in business benefit. He leads a team of information experts who manage projects across the Telecoms business and deliver solutions within asset management, process control and billing assurance. Jon uses a wide range of information quality tools within projects and has extensive experience in investigation and solving IQ problems.
Paul Smith started out his working life as a freelance programmer, but then qualified as a Chartered Accountant to add some business credibility to his programming skills. Since then, Paul has spent the last 15 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers (in its various guises) focusing on IT process /system design and heading up the Data Management skill set within PwC UK. The data side has provided some of the more interesting challenges for Paul over recent years including project managing the 2001 PwC Data Management survey and working with organisations to manage data quality issues. As a result Paul has gained a wealth of experience in the field of data and its integration with business in areas ranging from global ERP implementations to ongoing data quality management.
Ian Quilty is an experienced IS consultant who currently specialises in the Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing areas. He was initially involved in Data Management around 14 years ago, when he worked in the team implementing a Data Administration function at a large commercial organization. Ian moved on to provide consulting expertise in development tools, development methods and defining the development processes to effectively use these tools. This included defining Data Management standards and procedures for clients. Finally Ian has moved into the Data Warehousing area. This involves using his Data Management experience to understand and overcome the issues of implementing a single corporate model within a Data Warehouse solution. Ian is currently the Chair of the BCS Data Management Specialist Group. He has been involved in the running of the group for a number of years. He is present today representing the BCS Data Management Specialist Group.
Mike Ferguson is the Managing Director of Intelligent Business Strategies Ltd in the UK. As an analyst and consultant he specialises in database systems, business intelligence, enterprise application integration, corporate and e-business portals, customer relationship management and supply chain intelligent business solutions. With over 21 years of IT experience, Mike has consulted for dozens of companies, spoken at events all over the world and written numerous articles. Formerly he was principle and co-founder of Codd and Date UK and a chief architect on the Teradata DBMS.
David Hebbes s a consultant with SchlumbagerSema. David was involved in a challenging data warehouse implementation within the Vehicle Inspectorate. David presentation explained how the challenges were overcome to successfully implement the data warehouse and how Avellino was part of that success.
Mike Jenkins is based at RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire. Mike was heavily involved with a Teradata pilot project which introduced a data warehouse in support of the Sea King helicopter programme. Mike's presentation described his experiences and the lessons learned from the project.
Jim Amos - Honorary Senior Research Fellow, The Constitution Unit, School of Public Policy, University College London. From 1998, Jim Amos has undertaken research and consultancy relating to Freedom of Information (FOI), including studies of the use made by business of FOI in Australia, Canada, USA and the EU. He has advised the Information Commissioner on Publication Schemes, and DCA and OGC on guidance relating to the exemptions for commercial interests and procurement. He is the author of a number of publications relating to FOI including: FOI and Business - The Constitution Unit 1999; A Guide for Business to the Freedom of Information Act 2000 - jointly with Lovells 2001; A practical Guide to the Freedom of Information Act - with others - The Constitution Unit 2001. Prior to this, Jim had a career in the IT and telecommunications industries. This included management roles in Fujitsu, Nortel and ICL.
Robert Shields CBE CEng FIEE, UK Council for Electronic Business. Robert Shields is on secondment from BAE SYSTEMS as the Team Leader of the UK Council for Electronic Business Task Force, a small non-aligned team established to accelerate information sharing to support collaboration in defence acquisition. His first career was in the Army, which concluded with some years in the Ministry of Defence, as Director of Procurement Management Policy, Director of Support Policy (Army) and other appointments on the acquisition of weapons systems. His second career was then with GEC Marconi as the Enterprise Director for a major weapons system programme, before his secondments to lead a joint MOD /Industry team on enterprise integration and then the UKCeB Task Force.
Jonathan Mark Kay - Jonathan graduated from Nottingham University in 1995, and entered the service sector. He has worked with CRM and Database systems within the private sector, including banking and Medical indemnity work. Most recently Jonathan worked as a programmer for a major international IT services company, working on customer and internal database systems. He joined the Information Commissioner’s office at the end of 2001. Jonathan is based in the Policy Development and Quality section, which deals with policy issues, and international developments.
Peter Aiken - Founding Director and Principal owner, spearheads the technological basis for Data Blueprint's research efforts in conjunction with Institute Associates, Sponsors and Affiliates. He has more than 20 years of business/information technology experience. Dr Aiken's achievements have resulted in recognition in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, the publication of numerous books and articles on Data Engineering as well as other biographical compilations. Additionally, he is the recipient of the prestigious 2001 DAMA International Achievement Award (with Ted Codd). His clear and concise presentation style make him a sought after speaker and he has spoken at numerous foreign and domestic conferences and events.
Richard Durley, Information Architect, is 34 and has worked in IT for the past 12 years. For 11 of those years Richard worked for EDS as an Information Architect for General Motors as part of their Global Integration Factory and Shared Information Services groups. Richard was the Application Architect for EDS for Java and J2EE web application projects as part of the CyberApps development team. Richard has recently joined TESCO and for the past year has been working in the Group Technology and Architecture team as the Information Architect responsible for ETL and ODS Infrastructure Architecture.
Alan Parker – Ab Initio With an academic background in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Alan Parker’s career has focused on the design, development and sales of advanced computer systems. These systems cover enterprise scale applications in areas such as satellite remote sensing, financial trading, mutual fund administration and data warehousing. Alan is a Director of Ab Initio Software in the UK, which is part of a successful US company that provides high performance data processing solutions to many of the world’s largest companies. Alan’s presentation will cover how the use of web services and service orientated architectures are being hyped by many commentators and vendors as the answer to all know data exchange and integration challenges. In this presentation the concepts behind web services are examined to determine their true applicability in real world applications. Both the benefits and current issues with web services are examined with the objective of providing a balanced view of their value to the IT industry today and in the future.
Peter Cowley is Director of a Research Consultancy
specializing in preparing organizations for emerging and disruptive
technology. Clients include an AIM listed Investment House, the Department
of Trade and Industry, the National Physical Laboratory and International
Engineering and Data Management Companies. Peter also works closely with the
UK Research Councils, several leading Universities (including holding
visiting chairs at Manchester and Strathclyde) and is Chairman of two DTI
advisory committees. Until recently he was a member of the UK e-Science
steering committee.
After completing a PhD in solid-state physics at Liverpool
University, Peter started his career performing aerospace research for the
Ministry of Defence, he moved on to perform project management for the Sea
Systems Directorate where he delivered the Trident Reactor Core within
budget and on time. He was seconded into Rolls-Royce where he remained for
18 years – initially as Technical Consultant and R&D Project Manager for RR
Marine and then setting up a new Research Group in Information Engineering
before running the Strategic Research Centre and becoming Chief
Scientist-Research and Technology. Peter also spent time attached to a spin
out company producing smart sensors and has carried out technology
due-diligence investigations for both Rolls-Royce and British Gas.
Duncan Painter founded ClarityBlue, formerly known as
Sand Technology, in 1997 to offer Customer Intelligence solutions to
blue-chip companies. Basing the company proposition on the need for better
business applications and consulting to support sophisticated technological
solutions, Duncan has driven ClarityBlue to punch above its weight and beat
much larger organisations to win impressive clients.
From 1997 until the formation of the ClarityBlue division in
2002, Duncan was the president of Sand Technology's EMEA sales operation.
Prior to joining Sand, he worked for 14 years in IT and project
implementation, including European Director of Solutions, Sales, and Systems
Integration for Hitachi Data Systems, where he increased the division's
revenue to more than £26m within three years, and in 1997 he became the
youngest-ever board director of Hitachi.
Trevor Lea-Cox is a well-qualified and experienced Information, Systems and Technology Manager. From 1989 to 1996 he was the Group IS Manager and then Director for a large international Transportation and Travel Group based in South Africa. He was directly responsible for converting the Group’s mainframe-based computer bureau into a large networking company, one of the largest and most successful in Southern Africa at the time. He also introduced Information, Systems and Technology policies, standards and infrastructure that delivered a high level of uniformity and stability into the Group’s 23 operating companies and lowered the cost of IS and IT dramatically. Trevor has subsequently become a very experienced Information, Systems and Technology consultant, particularly in the areas of Planning and Strategy, Intellectual Capital Management and Information Security Management. He has also helped to plan and implement numerous company start-ups, mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures. He is a Senior Consulting Partner with Popkin Software.
Mike Edwards has been an Enterprise Architect consultant since 1990, and has promoted practical EA approaches for Lloyds TSB Bank, The Swinton Group, the DWP, EDS, Inland Revenue and Unilever amongst other organisations. He is now MD for Troux technologies Ltd, implementing Metis visual modelling solutions - a role which brings him face-to-face with the challenges of practical solutions for EA.
Lt Col Bailey RE was educated at
Prior Park College, Bath, and at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
He joined the Army on 24 Feb 1976 and he was commissioned into the
Royal Engineers in 1977. Over the
years he has served in the UK and Germany and has deployed on numerous
operational tours to Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Bosnia.
During that period he also gained a Civil Engineering Degree at the
Royal Military College of Science (RMCS), Shrivenham, and attended technical
staff training.
Chris attended No 22 Design of Information Systems (dis)
Masters Degree Course at the RMCS in 1997 and subsequently filled a staff
appointment responsible for the digitisation of the Royal Engineers.
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 2001 and was posted to
Blandford. His current role is to
assist Army organisations to express their requirements for information
systems, which has entailed his group developing skills in process
modelling, and the specification and derivation of user requirements.
Over the last year he has been at the forefront of the Army's
interest in architectural frameworks and has had an active role in
developing Defence thinking in the area.
His team is currently developing the Land Environment Command and
Battlespace Management (LECBM) Architecture which will provide the baseline
and context for projects in the land environment and support better
prioritisation, resourcing and synchronisation of programme activity
Paul
Johnson
graduated from Leeds University with a BSc in 1988 and entered the IT
industry as a graduate trainee. Since 1989 he has focused solely on high-end
data warehousing. With over 15 years real-world data warehousing experience,
using specialist technologies such as Teradata, Ab Initio, Netezza and
QueryObject. Paul is the CTO/Technical Director and co-founder of Leading
Edge Business Solutions Ltd, a Business Intelligence focused system
integrator. His areas of interest are data warehouse architectures, high-end
technologies and de-bunking technology vendors’ claims!
