Data Exchange - 2 December 2004 - Rolls-Royce plc, Derby

Distance seemed to be no object with over 40 delegates making their way to Derby for one of the best events DAMA UK has had to date. An excellent choice of speakers joined us for the day, please see below for biographies and presentations. Many thanks to Rolls-Royce plc provided us with the perfect venue (all bar a few parking problems!) and Ab Initio/ASG and UKCeB who supported/sponsored the catering for the day. Dave Evans (DAMA Chair) welcomed the speakers and delegates and gave a short presentation as well as Andrew Cameron after lunch, reporting on the results of the follow up Global Data Survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The results are available at

Speaker Biographies and Presentations

Richard Durley, Information Architect, is 34 and has worked in IT for the past 12 years. For 11 of those years Richard worked for EDS as an Information Architect for General Motors as part of their Global Integration Factory and Shared Information Services groups. Alan Parker – Ab Initio With an academic background in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Alan Parker’s career has focused on the design, development and sales of advanced computer systems.  These systems cover enterprise scale applications in areas such as satellite remote sensing, financial trading, mutual fund administration and data warehousing.  Alan is a Director of Ab Initio Software in the UK, which is part of a successful US company that provides high performance data processing solutions to many of the world’s largest companies. Alan’s presentation will cover how the use of web services and service orientated architectures are being hyped by many commentators and vendors as the answer to all know data exchange and integration challenges.  In this presentation the concepts behind web services are examined to determine their true applicability in real world applications. Both the benefits and current issues with web services are examined with the objective of providing a balanced view of their value to the IT industry today and in the future.

Duncan Painter founded ClarityBlue, formerly known as Sand Technology, in 1997 to offer Customer Intelligence solutions to blue-chip companies. Prior to joining Sand, he worked for 14 years in IT and project implementation, including European Director of Solutions, Sales, and Systems Integration for Hitachi Data Systems, where he increased the division's revenue to more than £26m within three years, and in 1997 he became the youngest-ever board director of Hitachi.

Not all of the presentations from the event are available for public viewing, we are currently awaiting de-sensitised copies to upload on to this site. Our apologies for the delay.
